A trip to Gabon is one that you really need to make the most of. There are some great attractions here but as many are off the main tourist trail you have to dig a little deeper!
One of the main attractions for tourists is the opportunity to see native wildlife at close quarters and for this a trip to the Bateke Plateau might be in order. This is home to a number of different animals including crocodiles, elephants and buffalos. Some tourists also make the trip to Mayumba, a tiny strip of land that sits between the ocean and the lake and where you can see thousands of humpback whales if you visit between July and September.
Make the most of the ocean-side location of the country and head for the beach. If you want to relax in seclusion then beaches such as Pointe Denis and Ekwata are the best options in the north of the country, while the beaches of Sette Cama and Mayumba are highly rated in the south. If you want to try a few water sports the beaches at Port Gentil and Libreville are popular with water skiers and there is a water sports centre located at Cap Esterias.
The lakes and rivers of Gabon are popular with fishing enthusiasts so you could pack your gear into your hire car and head to the nearest waterway. Taking along your own equipment might be a bit difficult but you can hire everything that you need in Port Gentil.
Those interested in a bit of retail therapy might want to spend a little time at Mount Bouet market. This is the largest market in Libreville and there are hundreds of stalls here selling everything that you could possibly want. Pick up textiles and traditional medicines here and haggle with the stall-holders.
The National Museum in Libreville is the perfect place for you to find out more about local traditions. It is a short walk from the Presidential Palace and it is home to some of Africa’s most beautiful wood carvings. Old photographs of the country are very popular with tourists.
Car rental can help you to get around Libreville’s attractions much more easily and one that you should not miss is the church of St Michael. This is a wooden church that has more than 30 tall wooden columns that are heavily carved. The carvings feature scenes from both traditional legends and Christian history and were created by blind craftsmen.
