One of the big attractions in Jamaica is all the parks and gardens. The landscaping here is exquisite and Shaw Park Botanical Gardens is ideal if you want to learn more. This park covers 25 acres and is filled mainly with native plants including hibiscus and bougainvillea. There are views of the Caribbean and there is a beautiful waterfall right at the centre of the gardens.
Not all gardens in Jamaica mean keeping your feet on dry land. There are some amazing underwater gardens along the coast where you can see sunken wrecks, rope sponge and black coral, as well as a wide array of tropical fish. Montego Bay Marine Park is one of the most popular with visiting divers. The waters here are protected and you can see all manner of marine life here.
When you hire a car in Jamaica you can take your time exploring the island and visit some of the backcountry villages. The mountainous interior of the county is filled with traditional villages. In some areas you cannot use a motor vehicle and will need to go on foot, preferably with a guide as some of the paths are not well sign-posted.
Don’t forget about the musical heritage of the island. The most famous musical son of Jamaica is Bob Marley. He spent much of his life living simply here and his house on Hope Road is now something of a shrine. There is a museum at the house for music enthusiasts.
The island is perfect for hiking and the Blue Mountains are idea. Rising to more than 7000 feet, there are hundreds of different species of flora and fauna here as well as dozens of different hiking trails. Your adventurous streak can also be satiated if you raft along the Rio Grande. This is one of the longest rivers on the island but it is a very gentle trip from Berrydale to St Margaret’s Bay.
Use your rental car to visit Port Royal, the former capital of the country. This is a fishing village that attracted all manner of people in the past including pirates. Most of the village was levelled by an earthquake at the end of the 18th century, but some historic buildings have survived.
