A trip to Belarus would not be complete without making sure that you see some of its best attractions. High on the list is Belavezha Wood, where bears, wolves and bison still live freely in their natural habitat. There are hiking trails for those who love an active holiday, right in the heart of this region which has achieved a UNESCO listing
Nature provides some of the best attractions in Belarus including Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park. Arrange a rental car to take the trip here, where you might feel as though things have not changed for centuries. This is another great place to view wildlife in its natural habitat. Then you could add the Braslav Lake District, which covers parts of the north and northeast of Belarus. This is a great place to take a boating holiday as there are around 30 lakes which are interconnected by canals.
The city of Brest is easily explored if you hire a car and attractions here include the fortress, which played a part in fighting off the Nazis in WWII. There is a museum there where you can learn more about the history of the fortress and the region dating back to the 13th century. Other attractions in the city include the White Tower and a puppet theatre that is popular with the tourists and the perfect place to take the kids.
Alternatively the city of Grodno might be a good place to visit. It is a border town and one that also played an important part in WWII. The old town centre is beautiful with buildings such as the Kalozh church and the old castle. A trip to the Cathedral of St Francis Xavier should also feature on your itinerary.
Mir Castle is just a couple of hours’ drive from Minsk and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town of Mir is home to a Jewish cemetery but the main attraction is the castle, which dates back to the 15th century. It is located in a large park with ornate gardens and lakes. However, if you don’t want to venture too far away from Minsk, consider the Museum of Folk Architecture, just 10 miles from the city. The museum has collected pieces of original buildings from all over the country. You need to plan for a whole day here as it covers more than 150 hectares and is open air.
