As Lithuania is relatively new to mass tourism you might wonder if there is anything there that is suitable for the average visitor. In fact, there is quite a lot that you can see and do during your stay.
Adventure holidays are an option while you are staying in Lithuania. Hire a car and head for Nida, a village that boasts white sandy beaches and where you can indulge your passion for water sports such as windsurfing, kiting, sailing and paragliding. You can also have the option for more extreme sports. One of the tallest bungee jumps in Europe can be found off Vilinius’ TV Tower so if you are feeling brave you can give it a go!
The country is filled with interesting museums and galleries and even has one dedicated to amber. It can be found at Palanga and there is a botanical park attached. The city of Kaunas is often referred to as the ‘city of museums’. This includes the Devil Museum, which is a permanent memorial to those who suffered as a result of the Nazi occupation and the Ciurlionis museum, filled with works by the painter of the same name.
If you plan your visit to Lithuania in September then you can take advantage of the Days of the Capital festival. Fairs, concerts, carnivals and fireworks displays can be found all over the capital city with many street performances. The international folk festival is held in the capital in May, located in the Old Town district. Here you can try a few local delicacies, join in the singing and shop for a bargain or two at one of the craft fairs.
Outdoor spaces are a big attraction for many of the tourists here and around a quarter of the country is covered in forests. Lithuania also boasts five national parks and plenty of areas that are protected for conservation. Many areas of the countryside have historic significance and when you arrange car hire in Lithuania you can easily take a trip to the Kernave mounds. This is the ancient capital of the country and it is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
If all this sounds as though you cannot enjoy a traditional beach holiday in Lithuania you need to think again! The areas of Palanga and Kursiu Nerija have great beaches, sand dunes and all the accommodation and entertainment that you could want.
