You could start out in Mamoudzou and take a day-long trek. This route runs from Kani-Keli village and Chirongui village. The route will see you climb Mount Mtsapere, at 572 metres high. If you enjoy climbing and hiking you can also take some time out to climb Mount Choungi, which you will find in the south. The views from the top of this mountain are amazing and you can see most of the island from here.
There are some amazing beaches on the island and the most famous can be found on the south west tip of Mayotte at Ngoudja. There is also the famous chocolate-coloured beach at Salou, where the waterfall runs directly into the sea. A number of tourists love to visit Plage Moya too. However, don’t forget that car rental is not possible here so you need to consider alternative transport when you are planning your days out.
A popular excursion for visitors is the trip to Pamandzi Island. There is a crater-lake here as well as the ruins of a settlement that date back to the 10th century. Anyone interested in the history of the region should make sure that they take the time to do this trip.
Those who are interested in nature and wildlife should spend a little time looking for animals such as the maki, the ring-tailed lemur. The forests here are filled with all kinds of interesting flora and fauna. You can also spot some of the local wildlife on the island’s beaches. The southern beaches of the island are a favourite with the sea turtles who come in to roost there and you can also spot humpback whales and their young in the lagoon during August and September.
The world’s largest lagoon can be found at Mayotte and diving is a popular pastime with visitors. There are organised excursions from some of the holiday resorts so you can dive with experienced divers.
There are a few things you need to remember when you visit Mayotte. It is a malaria zone and you should prepare accordingly. The population of the island is largely Muslim and the people here are friendly and welcoming so be sure to say hello to people while you are out and about.
