With a relatively new tourism industry you might be wondering just what there is to do when you get here. The truth is that there are plenty of attractions that are just waiting to be discovered!
The Mulanje Massif is perfect for those who are looking for an active holiday. The Massif has been named after the region it is in and hikers and climbers regularly visit the peaks. The region is mainly plains and tea-growing plantations but the mountains are a striking feature. There are huts for climbers to use and the highest point is around 10,000ft high.
The Lower Shire Valley can be found in the south of the country and it is so easy to get to if you have a hire car. The River Shire runs right through it – the only river to run from Lake Malawi – and links up to the Zambesi River. This part of the country is very fertile and is home to a number of sugar plantations.
With much of this country undeveloped there remains the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of some of the great explorers. Livingstone spent time in Nkhotakota, one of the oldest market towns in the country and here you will find that much of the town has been unchanged for a couple of hundred years. Then you could point your rental car in the direction of Nkhata Bay where there is a busy port and market and the tropical appearance of the town makes it very popular with visitors.
Liwonde National Park has gained a reputation as the best nature reserve in Malawi. It covers more than 200 square miles of sparse woodland and can be found in the south of the country. Take a safari here and you will see hippos, elephants, lions, antelope and a wide variety of birds. Alternatively you might want to try fishing during your stay in Malawi. You can fish all year round at Senga Bay and on the lake close to Mangochi. You can fish for trout in the rivers and streams or salmon in the lakes.
Water sports are an option for those who want an active holiday. You can spend time at Lake Malawi enjoying the snorkelling and scuba diving, but there is also water skiing, sailing and kayaking if you prefer. Lake Malawi National Park can be found at the southern end of the lake and you will also be able to spot vervet monkeys and inland antelope around the lake.
