Vilnius is the capital and largest city of Lithuania. It lies in the valley of the confluence of Neris and Vilnia rivers and has 527,930 inhabitants Along with Linz, Austria, Vilnius was the European Capital of Culture in 2009.
Vilnius International Airport (VNO). It is the largest civil airport in Lithuania and is located 4.6km south of both bus and train stations, and 6.22km from city centre, as measured by the transport routes.
The Bus ride to the centre takes 15 minutes and buses depart from the airport every 10–15 minutes. Only one piece of hand luggage to fit under a single seat is allowed. For larger luggage, extra tickets should be bought.
It is recommended that you follow the local practice and book the taxi before arrival. There are also taxis waiting at the airport in front of the arrivals terminal. In order to avoid misunderstandings, know your destination because all average prices are for the distance from the airport to the bus station.
What to see
Old town (Senamiestis)
It is a city area which began to develop extensively since the Middle Ages and eventually has been surrounded by a defensive wall. The wall determined a firm area and its shape for a long period of time, this area now is called Old Town and has a separate status in Vilnius administrative division.
Traditional Vilnius festivals
Speigas (Frost), takes place in severe conditions of the premises of selected club, traditionally it is “Kablys” (see “Clubs” section below). Annual festival of post-industrial and avant-garde electronic music. Tend to extend also to Kaunas.
Kaziuko mugė (Kaziukas Fair) — a Saint Casimir's Day, the largest annual folk arts and crafts fair held in the streets of Vilnius’ centre and Old Town on the Friday-Sunday nearest to March 4.
International Film Festival (Vilnius IFF) “Kino pavasaris” is the largest cinematic event in the country, known and loved for its high quality independent film programme and rich accompanying package of cinema-related events, workshops, and special initiatives.
Mados infekcija - Event usually takes place in Contemporary Art Centre - see section “Museums” above. Annually, in the spring, approximately the second half of March. A prominent conceptual fashion festival where professional and upcoming designers are brought together.
Europos dienos. Annually 9 May and the nearest weekend to this day. Celebration dedicated to united Europe; a traditional Restaurant Fair "Taste Of Europe" takes place on the main street Gediminas Avenue stretching from Cathedral Sq towards Parliament for about 1km.
Vilniaus festivalis. Annually from the end of May to the beginning of July. International festival of classical music, one of the most prestigious, solid and versatile events in Lithuania.
Kristupo vasaros festivalis, Runs for 2 months, July and August. The largest summer music festival in Lithuania, various concert events take place in different spaces in Vilnius, also stretches to some other districts of the country.
Vilnius Documentary Film Festival (VDFF), “Skalvija” Cinema Centre, A. Goštautas St 2/15. Lasts for several days in the second half of September. Largest international documentary film festival in the Baltic States, focusing on intellectual audience.
Vilnius Jazz. Annually the long weekend in the middle of October. Founded in 1987, it remains an exceptional event in Lithuania, providing a broad perspective on contemporary trends in jazz from all over the world. Has earned a reputation of a radical avant-garde festival oriented towards novelty and limit-stretching creativity.
