Even though Kazakhstan is not really geared up for the tourist trade, there is still plenty for you to see and do during your stay. The city of Almaty, for example, is filled with attractions including a park that is home to one of the tallest wooden buildings in the world, and which was completed without using any nails, believe it or not! In addition, the city has a beautiful cathedral and a number of good quality museums where you can learn more about the history of the region.
History buffs will be pleased to know that there are several archaeological sites in Kazakhstan. There are sites that date back to the Bronze Age in the Karkarala Oasis. A trip to the Bayan-Aul National Park will also let you see some of the region’s rock drawings, as well as beautiful lakes.
A must for any scientist is the Baikonur Cosmodrome. This is the site of the launch into space of Yuri Gagarin in 1961, and you can find out more by taking one of the tours. At just three miles from the city of Leninsk, your rental car will make this trip easier for you.
Kazakhstan is not ignoring the sports enthusiasts either. There are plenty of opportunities to go hiking and trekking in the country thanks to the various mountainous areas. It is recommended that you visit between June and September if you want to go trekking. You can also indulge in water sports almost anywhere in the country. Rafting and canoeing trips are popular and local travel agents can book them for you in advance so you can be sure of a place.
Skiing is a popular pastime here too, thanks to the Zaili Alatau mountains close to Almaty. The city also boasts the world’s largest speed-skating rink and if you are feeling less than active you could just go along and watch an ice hockey game. Chimbaluk is the home of the winter sports complex and there are regular competitions held here.
Even though tourism is in its infancy, you can still take a spa break in Kazakhstan. There are a large number of spa resorts, with some in the aforementioned Zaili Alatau mountains and others such as the Sari Agach resort and the Mujaldi resort. The types of activities and treatments vary (as well as the cost!) but reaching the resorts is no problem when you have arranged to hire a car during your stay.
