Iraq Car Hire & Travel Information

There are a number of good reasons why you might want to visit Iraq, from the historic attractions to the great markets and bazaars.  Here are just a few suggestions that you might want to add to your itinerary to help to make the most of every moment of your trip.

The Kadhimain Mosque in the city of Baghdad.  This is one of the most important religious sites in Iraq and it is also one of the most elaborate and impressive.  This current building dates back to the 16th century but there has been a site here since the 8th century.  The National Museum is now one of the top attractions in the country and is filled with archaeological artefacts that tell the story of the country’s vast history.

You could make the most of the car rental services in Iraq to visit a few of the ancient sites.  The city of Ur is an archaeological site and the remains of the Great Ziggurat can be seen here.  Some of the ruins here go back to the 21st century BC.  Then you can head south from Baghdad and take a trip to the site of ancient Babylon.  The city dates back to 2300 BC and was once an important political centre as well as a religious one.  There is not much left of the city but it is still worth the trip.  The Islamic ruins at Samarra are also worth the trip.  This site achieved UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 2007, thanks to the way that the ruins have been preserved.  There is a mosque that dates back to the 9th century and the site was once part of the Abbasid Empire.

You could take a boat trip along the Shatt El-Arab waterway.  Here you can meet some of the locals.  Many of them live on artificial islands in homes that have been carefully woven from the reeds.  If the waterways of Iraq are of interest to you then the canals at Basra are a must.  These are surrounded by buildings that date back to the 19th century.

Car hire in Baghdad can make it easier if you want to go shopping – with so many markets and bazaars you could find you buy more than you planned.  The city’s bazaars have once again become popular and you can pick up things like spices and fabrics at a very reasonable price. is part of Ecommerce Group NV
