Traditional tourist attractions are few and far between in Djibouti but if you are planning a trip here you do not have to worry that there is nothing to do. The country has plenty of things that you might be interested in, particularly if you are the adventurous type.
The Afar Triangle is not for the faint-hearted! This is a geographical feature and Djibouti sits within it. This is one of the hottest places on Earth and it is certainly one of the most desolate. This is a stretch of desert with most of it lying below sea level. While it is beautiful, it is usually something only the most experienced travellers will explore.
Make use of your rental car to head to Ambouli, located just outside Ajibouti. When the weather is cooler you can enjoy a stroll in the palm grove there. The city of Djibouti itself though is definitely worth exploring. Much of it dates back to the latter part of the 19th century and there is a strong Arabic ambiance here. The Central Market is a popular place and you can pick up a few bargains and souvenirs here while chatting with the locals.
Djibiouti is not short of a few good beaches so load up your hire car and head off to Doralé or Khor-Ambado. Both of these are just 10 miles away from the capital city and you can swim safely at both of them. Alternatively you can head for Ghoubet al Kharab, a unique setting with the cliffs developing from black lava. This beach is around an hour from Lake Assal.
Divers and snorkelers can head for the Gulf of Tadjoura where there are coral reefs and a wide variety of marine life to see. Some of the reefs can be easily reached from the beach and this is also a great place if you want to try underwater photography. Visit from September to May to get the best weather and waters.
Lake Assal is a very unique landscape with several dormant volcanoes and lava fields. Just 60 miles away from Djibouti City, this is one of the lowest areas on the planet as it sits 570 feet below sea level. Be aware that it can only be reached using a 4 wheel drive vehicle, but there are organised trips that you can take. The desert areas are also ideal for some land windsurfing too.
