Qatar Go Rent A Car
I rent a car from your website and company every month and as always every time things run smooth.
When you visit a country like the Democratic Republic of Congo you need to be aware that public transport is not like it is in Europe. There are not as many options available to you and you need to plan your trip in advance so that you can figure out what transport options you need to use and when.
With a country this big driving from one side to another is not always the best thing to do but you can use the CAA airline which offers domestic flights.
However, some people do want to drive and if you are considering Congo car hire then remember that they drive on the right-hand side of the road. You also need to remember that road quality is not great although in the cities it is not too bad. Drivers also need to be aware that some bridges are not safe to drive across either! Car rental should be arranged at the airport but book in advance because there are limited options due to low tourist numbers. Don’t forget to arrange your international driving permit before you go.
When you are in cities there may be taxis that are available, particularly in Kinshasa but these are not the most reliable of services. Kinshasa does have a bus service but this is one that is nearly always overcrowded so they will not be the most comfortable of journeys. Keep an eye open for the ‘fula fulas’ – converted trucks and minibuses. If you are going to other cities then public bus transport may be non-existent.
There are some rail services between cities like Kinshasa and Matadi, Lubumbashi to Ilébo and taking in locations like Kalemie and Kindu. Like buses and taxis there is generally disruption and they are not comfortable journeys due to a lack of air conditioning but on the main trains there are dining cars so you can enjoy a meal on a long trip.
One alternative is to travel along the Congo River as it is navigable for more than 1000 miles. There are some transport services which can be used but these are infrequent and hard to book in advance. Fuel shortages are also a problem in some of the river areas.
Car hire is often the best option in a region like this because it means that you are not reliant on public services that may or may not turn up!
