If you are planning a trip to Burkina Faso you might want to plan ahead and put an itinerary together, so what type of attractions should you be considering?
The town of Banfora is south-west of Bobo and it is worth a visit. Car rental is going to be useful when you are travelling outside the main cities and here you can make good use of it to visit the Karfiguela Waterfalls. These are just three miles from Banfora and from there you can go on to the town of Sindou where there are some amazing rock formations that should not be missed.
The market at Bobo is the ideal place to mingle with the locals while shopping for locally made goods and crafts but the city also has other attractions. The Musée Provincial du Houët is where you can learn more about the history of the area and there is also the Grande Mosquée in the Kibidwé area. Your rental car will also be useful if you want to visit the sacred fish pond of La Mare aux Poissons Sacrés, which is five miles outside the city.
Games reserves are also on offer in Burkina Faso, but note that you will have to pay an entrance fee to all the reserves and there are tour operators that can organise your trip for you. Arli, Kabore Tembi and W are the most well-known of the national parks. If you take a trip to Sabou you can get up close to the crocodiles if you are brave enough!
Burkina Faso has long been popular with hikers and if this is something that you would like to try head for the area near Banfora. The Escarpment there offers amazing views of the region but you can also try the Sénoufo region and the Lobi region. If you feel like swapping your hiking boots for a while, why not try one of the mountain biking trips around Banfora and Bobo?
Finally, consider adding the Moro-Naba Palace to your itinerary. Every Friday at 6 am there is a ‘drama’ performed at the palace, which is located in Ouagadougou, acting out the emperor going to war with his brother. The palace and many other places also host traditional dances and music when there are holidays and other festivals, but if you want to be sure to catch some of this, head to the folklore-rich south-west region.
